Frequently Asked Questions
1)
Who is Braille Transcription UK Ltd?
Braille Transcription UK Ltd is the brain child of partners, Philip & Judi Anderson. The company specializes in the conversion of text to Braille, large print, e-text and audio text.
2)
What are our aims and objectives?
Our main aim is to provide a professional and efficient service for all our clients at a price they can afford.
Without Braille, large print, the spoken word and other types of accessible media, the visually impaired would be cut off from a world of information, be it in education, employment or leisure.
Therefore, we want to ensure that material is made widely available in as many formats to as many visually impaired people as possible.
We are constantly in close communication with small and large companies, colleges and universities, organisations and individual groups in an effort to raise their awareness in such matters as ‘accessible information’ and what this means for them and their potential clients.
Even though it took Louis Braille’s idea a number of years to take off, the system as we know it today, has brought endless benefits to the lives of countless thousands of blind and visually impaired people. We here at Braille Transcription UK Ltd are no exception. We are determined, despite a move in favour of today’s digital technology, to encourage the use of Braille, large print and the spoken word in as many areas as possible.
3)
How long does it take to produce a document in Braille, Large print, e-text
and audio text?
how long is a piece of string? We have to say that it all depends on how big the document is in the first place. Furthermore, not always is size an issue but rather the type of document being transcribed: is it a set of charts and tables or is it merely straight forward text?
Naturally plain text is easier and will invariably take less time than charts and tables. If we are not particularly busy then we generally estimate about 2-3 days for plain text documents of not more than 20 pages and about a week to 10 days for charts and tables with the same amount of pages. Of course, larger documents will take longer, but seeing that we take great care with everything we transcribe, enlarge and record, little can be gained by speed.
4) How much do we charge?
Jobs are priced individually according to size, format and other technicalities, and as such, it is not possible to say here exactly how much we would charge for a given document.
However, research shows us to be very competitive on price but we are way above average when it comes to customer service and timescale. Indeed, Appreciative feedback from our clients on our presentation is testimony of our professional aims and objectives.
5) What can we transcribe?
If it is available in print, then we like to say that we can transcribe it into Braille. However, there are a few things we do not transcribe: tactile maps, diagrams and technical graphs, drawings and grids.
We mainly concentrate on text documents be it a book, magazine, menu or manual.
Letters, brochures, utility bills are part of our daily transcription timetable. These are areas we feel we excel and as such we guarantee without any doubt to produce them promptly and professionally in order that the client is not kept waiting.
Finally, may we say that companies planning to avail their literature in various formats should set the wheels in motion at or as near to the time they decide to produce them in print so as to allow enough time for the material to be transcribed and ready on the date of their text documents.
6) What is the best way to submit documents to
us for transcribing and what formats may these be sent?
The cheapist way to send in documents is by e-mail or on computer disk. You also save money on the transcription side of things as we do not have to physically imput the text in to the PC.
We accept the following formats:
Word for Windows; rich text/plain text; PDF and HTML.
In order for us to provide you with an accurate quotation, we strongly recommend that you send us samples of the documents first. One might say that the document is 20 pages long, but in reality it is only 15 when you deduct all the half blank ones.
